How to Get a Life Insurance License in Michigan

You cannot sell life insurance in Michigan without a state producer license. The good news: the path is short, cheap, and fully in your control. Here is the whole thing, in the order you do it, with every number taken from the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS).

Step 1: Take the 20 hour course
Michigan requires pre-licensing education before you can sit for the exam. For the Life line of authority that is 20 hours of DIFS approved coursework, which you can take in a classroom or as a self study course.

Step 2: Pass the state exam
Michigan's insurance licensing exams are administered by PSI. You register through PSI's Michigan portal, pick a date, and test. Treat it like any test that matters: take the practice exams in your course until you are scoring well above passing.

Step 3: Apply for the license
Once you pass, you apply online. The license application fee is $10.00, plus a $5.00 transaction fee for filing electronically. That is the whole state cost of the application.
The application includes background questions. DIFS reviews your answers before issuing a license, so answer every one accurately. If something in your history needs explaining, explain it up front.

Step 4: Start working
